First Few Visits

Take a look below at some of the expectations for your newborn’s visits.

3-5 Days Visit

1 Month Visit

2 Month Visit

3-5 Days

Congratulations on the arrival of your little one. Welcoming a newborn is a beautiful and exciting time, and it can also be tiring. Having trusted friends or family nearby for support can make these early days a little easier. Remember to kindly ask all visitors to wash their hands before holding your baby.

Your baby’s first visit to our office will take place during the first week of life, usually one to two days after you are discharged from the hospital. This visit allows us to check on feeding, weight, jaundice and overall well-being, and to support you as you begin this new chapter.

We do a lot at this visit

Immunizations: HepB#1 (if not given in hospital) Tests/Screens/Assessments: Follow-up on Newborn Metabolic Screen done in hospital

Hepatitis B Vaccine Information Statement | CDC

2 Weeks

The two week visit, or sooner if you have any concerns, is our chance to check in on how your family is adjusting to your newest little one. We will discuss feeding, bowel habits and sleep patterns, and make sure everything is progressing in a healthy direction.

If you are breastfeeding, you can meet with one of our lactation consultants for personalized support. It is normal for babies to lose a little weight after birth, and by two weeks most have returned to their birth weight.

We will also review safe sleep practices. Your baby should sleep on their back, on a flat and firm surface, in their own separate sleep space. This lowers the risk of SIDS and helps keep your baby safe.

As always, we are here to answer your questions and support you through every step of this early journey.

1 Month

By this visit, many families are beginning to settle into a routine. Feeding, sleeping and bowel habits can still raise questions, and we are here to talk through all of it with you. We will check your baby’s growth and development and make sure everything is on track.

You may also start to see your baby’s first smiles, and those little moments make this stage even more special.

Immunizations: HepB#2
Tests/Screens/Assessments: Post Partum Depression Assessment, TB Surveillance

2 Months

Many babies are more fussy or colicky at this age. It can be challenging, but it is temporary. Most colicky babies eventually outgrow this phase, even if the days feel long right now.

Your baby’s safety is always the priority. If you start to feel overwhelmed or frustrated, handle your baby gently and do not hesitate to reach out to friends, family or us for support. If you need a moment to calm down and no one is available to help, place your baby gently on their back in a safe sleep space, such as a crib or bassinet, and take a few minutes to breathe. Sometimes a short reset is all you need.

Infant & Newborn Care

Explore the moments, challenges and milestones you may experience during your baby’s first 12 months, and feel confident knowing you are never walking this journey alone. Our team is here to guide, support and care for your family every step of the way.

Immunizations & Vaccines

Vaccines play an important role in keeping children healthy. Many vaccine-preventable diseases are far less common today, but they still occur in the United States. When fewer babies are vaccinated, more babies are at risk of getting sick. Vaccinating on time helps protect your child and the children around them.

Jaundice

Newborn jaundice is common and occurs when a baby’s bilirubin levels are higher than usual. Most cases are mild and improve on their own, but some babies need closer monitoring or treatment. We check your baby’s skin color, feeding patterns and bilirubin levels to make sure everything is moving in a safe direction. If jaundice rises or lasts longer than expected, we will guide you on the next steps to keep your baby healthy.

SIDS

Unsafe sleep environments lead to thousands of infant deaths each year in the United States. These tragedies can happen through suffocation, entrapment, strangulation or sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). The good news is that many of these risks can be reduced with simple, safe sleep practices.

At Totality, we want every family to feel informed and empowered. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) offers clear guidance on how to create a safe sleep space for your baby, and we are here to help you follow it with confidence.

Umbilical Cord Care

During the first few weeks, your baby’s umbilical cord stump will slowly dry, shrink and eventually fall off. You do not need to use alcohol on the cord. Simply keep the area clean and dry.

It is normal to see a small spot of blood on the diaper when the stump separates. If you notice active bleeding or if the area looks red, swollen or has a foul odor, contact your baby’s doctor right away. If an infection is present, your baby will need medical care. We are here to help you keep everything healing safely.

Breastfeeding & Lactation

While we do not have a lactation specialist on site, you are never without support. We have strong relationships with experienced lactation consultants who care deeply about helping families thrive. We can connect you with them for personalized guidance, and when needed, we can even arrange for them to visit on site to support you and your baby. Our goal is to make sure every family feels confident, supported and cared for on their feeding journey.
